Shortly after announcing updates to the entire SUV family’s lineup, Toyota will give the 2020 4Runner a unique special edition. The 4Runner Venture Edition, which is based on the TRD Off-Road Premium model, is uniquely outfitted with standard features to make it more rugged and useful when off the beaten path.
The most obvious alteration to the Venture Edition is the standard Yakima Megawarrior roof rack, which is mounted to standard roof rails and crossbars. Made from heavy-duty steel, the Yakima basket measures 52 inches long, 48 inches wide, and 6.5 inches high.
Other styling changes include the Gunmetal-finished 17-inch wheels, whose styling is inspired by those of the TRD Pro model. Complementing them is a glossy black finish for the exterior badges, sideview mirrors, door handles, and rear roof spoiler. Furthermore, the 4Runner Venture Edition has a debadged C-pillar for a more modern look.
Inside, the SUV is similar to the TRD Off-Road Premium upon which it is based, with SofTex upholstery front and rear that does a convincing—and harder-wearing—imitation of leather. It also gets standard CRAWL control, active traction control, and Multi-Terrain Select, like the TRD Off-Road. The 4Runner Venture Edition adds to that with standard all-weather floor mats and rear cargo mat, with an optional sliding rear cargo deck for easier loading and unloading.
All 2020 4Runners come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), which bundles features like automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. In addition to TSS-P, Toyota finally blessed the SUV family (including the 4Runner Venture Edition) with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity.
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner Venture Edition is priced at $44,285 to start, which is nearly $2,000 more than the TRD Off-Road Premium. Whether the floor mats, roof rack, cross bars, and black-out goodies are worth it to you isn’t for us to dictate, but the Venture will undoubtedly be a fun off-roader in the vein of its family lineage.
