That’s how Lamborghini describes the new Urus, a sleek and powerful SUV named, in Lamborghini tradition, after a bull, in this case an ancestor of today’s domestic cattle. It certainly sounds super on paper: Power comes from a 4.0L twin-turbocharged V-8 that makes 650 hp and propels the Urus to 100 kph (about 60 mph) in 3.5 seconds, says Lambo.
Power is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission to an AWD drivetrain with a driving mode selector. Under normal conditions power is split 40/60 front and rear. A Torsen center self-locking diff can change that bias to send up to 70 percent of the power up front and 87 percent to the rear. Active torque vectoring via the rear diff can distribute power to each wheel as needed, depending on driving mode and surface traction.
The Tamburo (Italian for drum) driving mode selector has several choices (all in Italian, of course), including Strada (street), Terra (off-road), Neve (snow), and Sabbia (sand), plus Corsa (race) and Sport. The mode selector is also linked to the Urus’ air suspension, which lowers the SUV in Sport mode and raises it for the off-road (Terra, Neve, and Sabbia) settings.
There’s lots more to talk about: standard carbon ceramic brakes, an optional off-road package with metal-reinforced bumpers and extra protection under the floor, tires developed by Pirelli specifically for the Urus for wheels ranging from 21 to 23 inches in diameter, and luxury interior appointments that include a 1,700-watt sound system.
Pricing is expected to start at $200,000 with deliveries beginning in the spring. If you’re in the market for one, you probably know your local Lamborghini dealer, right?
